The German Physical Society (DPG) awarded DESY PhD student Marvin Edelmann the Georg-Simon-Ohm Prize for his master thesis. With this prize, the DPG honors outstanding theses in physical engineering or related courses at universities of applied sciences.

In his master thesis, done in the Ultrafast Optics and X-Rays group under the supervision of Prof. Franz Kärtner at DESY, Edelmann describes the development, the theoretical framework, and the successful demonstration of three advanced and novel fiber optic technologies for pulse train generation with very low noise, approaching the fundamental constraints given by the quantum nature of light.
In doing so, Marvin Edelmann explains important questions of fundamental research and at the same time provides insights in the construction of ultralow-noise short-pulse lasers, which are required for many applications, from multiphoton microscopy to the generation of photonic microwave signals and optical frequency comb technology.

Marvin Edelmann earned his master's degree in "Engineering Physics" in December 2021, supervised by Prof. Matthias Wollenhaupt at the University of Oldenburg/Hochschule Emden/Leer.
